Can Postpartum Hospital care be Billed to Newborn?

We recently had a baby at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. We are insured, and expected to have to pay up to our insurance (United Healthcare) annual deductible for my wife.

Apparently though, the newborn has been billed for all of his care after he was born. Because he has a separate deductible, we are now being asked to pay several thousand more dollars.

Is this a normal and acceptable billing practice? We had been led to believe that the whole labor and delivery would be charged on my wife’s insurance and so we would just have the one deductible to pay.

With most policies, there is a deductible for dependents as well as the plan participant. Often 3 deductibles comprise the maximum deductible for the year. So if you have 2 parents and 2 children, you would not have to pay 4 deductibles, for example.

There are ways to negotiate reductions with the hospital. If you would like help with that, please contact me.
