hospital bill waived but no written proof given

my relative is 80 years old and on social security disability. his monthly disability check is a little less than his rent of $500.00. he has $10,000.00 in the bank to his name, and was recently hospitalized. he received the 1st hospital bill and medicare paid their portion and the bill states he owes a balance of $1,100.00. he called patient accounts and explained his position, and asked if he could arrange monthly payments since more hospital bills will come and they had him come in with his direct deposit ss passbook, copy of his latest paid monthly rent bill, and the current hospital due bill notice, and he was told the hospital will waive all payments, and he does not have to pay anything, but they never explained why he was entitled, or what that entitlement is called, and they said he will not be given any paper work to this effect, but they also advised should he receive any future bills relative to this hospital stay, he should call patient relations back and they will also waive all those charges. he is worried now with no written proof given to him by patient accounts that the hospital is now not asking for any hospital bills to be paid by him, that a collection agency may contact him in the near future for all payments. can you please advise if he has a reason to be worried and concerned, especially since patient accounts did not give him anything stating they are not expecting any payments from him whatsoever?

There really isn’t any guarrantee that the hospital won’t continue to try and collect the amount owed. There are some complications for the hospital if they put it in writing. Medicare can be sticklers to providers writing off the patient’s responsibility of the bill.
One step you (or your uncle) could take is to document the phone call and send a letter to the hospital with the details of the agreement.
