How to question a hospital bill

I requested an itemized hospital bill from my recent surgery. I found a duplicated charge for a lab fee and I want to question the recovery room time. I was in recovery longer than expected because they could not get me a bed on a floor and I don’t feel I should be charged the addtional recovery room fee. Is there a specific way to approach the hospital about the charges? I have insurance but I am liable for the deductible and the co-insurance.

You should call your insurance company and question the recovery room charges–ask if it is okay that the hospital is billing you for the recovery room additional time, because they couldn’t find an available bed. Alert them to the lab charge, too. You may then want to ask if they could perform an audit of the bill, too.
