Find a Question:
Which insurance company is supposed to pay for my back surgery hospital stay?

I had back surgery during the holidays and spent a couple days in the hospital. I purposely planned the surgery during the holidays so that I wouldn’t miss much work. I didn’t think about my employer switching to a new health insurance plan on January 1st, 2010.
Now, I’m getting bills from the hospital and the doctors for the full amount of the surgery. The new insurance company is denying the coverage since I wasn’t covered by them until January 1. The other plan said it is the new plans responsibility.
I can’t afford to pay this bill. We’re talking thousands of dollars. What should I do? Doesn’t the insurance companies have to pay for my hospital stay and doctor bills?

If you were admitted to the hospital in December and were discharged in January the usual rule is that the entire hospital stay is covered by the insurance company that authorized the surgery. Look over your denial and write an appeal letter to your insurance company. You can also call your state insurance commissioner and ask for help.
